Summary:
Provides background on synthetic and designer drugs, and discusses Federal scheduling of controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), including temporary scheduling of substances. Provides overview of current trends in selected synthetic cannabinoids and stimulants and summarizes policy issues. Reviews the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012, which added five structural classes of substances in synthetic cannabinoids, their analogues, and 11 synthetic stimulants and hallucinogens to Schedule I of CSA.
