Summary:
Provides background on compounded drugs (CDs), which are created when a pharmacist combines, mixes, or alters various drug ingredients to create medication for an individual patient in response to a specific prescription from a physician. Addresses health concerns relating to CDs, and defines traditional and nontraditional compounding pharmacies. Discusses Federal, State, and industry regulation and efforts to increase safety of CDs; and examines factors leading to increase of nontraditional compounding. Covers issues related to adverse event reporting and labeling, and Federal role in oversight.
