Summary:
The text currently available appears to have been formed in at least three successive times around an ancient pre-existing nucleus, the content of which is strongly apocalyptic, is in many ways similar to certain sections of the pseudoepigraphic Book of Henoch, to which our entire text was for a long time directly but improperly coupled. Written perhaps in the Babylonian area around the 5th-6th century AD, the Sefer hêkalôt carries on that branch of cabalistic speculation known as ma'aseh merkavah or "Opera del Carro", whose goal is the direct experience of God's presence. In Sefer hêkalôt the journey towards the vision of the merkavah is attributed to Rabbi Ismael ben Elisa.
