Summary:
This lecture is intended for beginners with little or no Jewish background -- those new to Judaism and new to genealogy. Judaism before a few generations ago was an entire way of life for our ancestors. Judaism was an all-encompassing civilization that defined our ancestors' notion of culture and nationhood as well as religion. For those who want to go back several generations, it is essential to have a basic understanding of our ancestors' lives to be able to find information and to make sense of what is found. Lecture topics include Hebrew as the holy language; the importance of religious names; the language of responsibility and obligation as defined in the notion of "mitzvah"; sacred texts; ethical values; customs with some discussion of ethnic diversity within the Jewish people; the all-important lunar intercalated with solar Hebrew calendar -- for those doing any Jewish genealogy, the importance of understanding the Hebrew calendar can not be over-emphasized; the holiday cycle; the life cycle; and an overview of Jewish history. Throughout the lecture both communal institutions and physical artifacts are identified. The session concludes with advice on avoiding unintentional offense when approaching others in the world of Jewish genealogy.
