Binding: full blue cloth; left board has title ("Songs of Animal Life") stamped in dark blue with red and dark blue initials and statement of responsibility ("Poems by Mary Howitt") stamped in dark blue, the whole illustrated with a squirrel crouched on an oak branch with leaves and nuts in dark blue, three birds above in dark blue, and a sun with rays in red; right board has publisher's monogram stamped in dark blue; title stamped in gold on spine between blue and gold rules and gold floriate decorations (the lower on a blue background); red floriate decoration between red and blue rules at head of spine; statement of responsibility in blue above red illustration of a beaver(?) beneath foliage beside a stream; "100 Engravings" stamped in blue above blue rules and floriate decoration at foot of spine.

Schimmel Collection copy has autograph ("Reginald Helsby age 13 yrs.") in pencil on half-title leaf, possibly to be identified with Reginald Helsby (1873-1939) and to be dated ca. 1886.
