- Summary:
- Biological invasions now influence biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide, with negative impacts on the global economy, food security and human health. These diverse consequences of species introductions have motivated invasion biology - the study of introduced species and their impacts on natural and human-altered environments. Research in this area initially focussed on ecological and environmental questions, but advances in molecular techniques and population genetic theory have led to the rise of an exciting new discipline - invasion genetics -concerned with the processes shaping genetic diversity and contemporary evolution in invading populations. This book brings together leading authorities to provide the first comprehensive 'state-of-the-art' treatment of the evolutionary and ecological genetics of invasive organisms. Comprising 20 chapters, Invasion Genetics: The Baker and Stebbins Legacy is divided into three sections comprising the latest research on the evolutionary ecology, evolutionary genetics and genomics of biological invasions. The volume also serves to celebrate the legacy and 50-year anniversary of the 1965 volume The Genetics of Colonizing Species, edited by H.G. Baker and G.L Stebbins, by revisiting many of the key topics and controversies covered in this highly influential work. The book will be of interest to evolutionary biologists, geneticists, ecologists, conservation biologists, and all those concerned with the management of invasive species. Book jacket.
