- Summary:
- Discusses current proposals for a Federal renewable electricity standard (RES), which would require certain retail electric providers to obtain a minimum percentage of the power they sell from renewable energy sources or energy efficiency; and proposals for a broader clean energy standard (CES) that would extend eligible technologies meeting the requirement to include advanced coal and nuclear energy, while also targeting retirement of existing polluting fossil generation. Explores how such policies could potentially increase amounts of renewable electricity generated in the U.S., discusses other related public policy goals and rationales for renewable energy development, and highlights challenges and drawbacks of RES and CES policy.
