Summary:
Examines roles of optional standard mileage rate, explains why charitable and medical/moving standard mileage rates are lower than the business rates, considers value of tax subsidy, outlines legislative history, and outlines legislation in the 111th Congress. Calculates tax savings per mile from a charitable mileage deduction, at each of the six marginal tax rates under the individual income tax, at the current rate of 14 cents per mile and at alternative charitable mileage rates proposed in the bills introduced. Compares value of mileage reimbursements after tax under different scenarios to the tax savings from mileage deductions. Includes tables.
