- Provides background on and summarizes Ricci v. DeStefano, in which a group of white firefighters challenged city officials in New Haven, Conn., over their refusal to certify a promotional test, on which minority firefighters had performed poorly relative to white firefighters. Reviews Supreme Court ruling that this decision violated race provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in employment. Highlights significance of case, in light of role of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in prior ruling in the case.
