- Examines causes for escalation of drug-related violence in Mexico. Summarizes Mexican counterdrug efforts, information on major drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) and other groups and emergent cartels, causes and trends in the violence, Calderon Government efforts to crackdown on DTOs, and corruption challenges; and considers escalation of violence in 2008 and 2009. Analyzes objectives and implementation of the Merida Initiative and other measures that U.S. Government has taken to support Mexico in its battle with the drug traffickers.
