- Summarizes statutory authority of intelligence officials to issue national security letters (NSLs) to compel certain types of service providers to produce records of their customers and other items relevant to terrorism investigations, under the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act. Reviews current proposed legislation to amend and in some cases repeal NSL authority. Provides side-by-side comparison of provisions of the bills and current law; and presents text of five NSL statutes as they now appear and as they appeared prior to amendment by the USA PATRIOT Act.
