Summary:
Reviews history of the uniform crime reports (UCR), the national incident-based reporting system (NIBRS), and the national crime victimization survey (NCVS), all of which collect crime data to inform policy decisions and allocate Federal criminal justice funding to States. Examines methods each program uses to collect crime data, considers limitations of data collected by each program, and compares similarities and differences of UCR and NCVS data. Reviews issues related to the NIBRS and the NCVS.
