Biography/History:
Schliemann was born in Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Northern Germany. He earned his fortune as a German businessman in Europe and the United States. After amassing his fortune, Schliemann delved into the world of archaeology. As an archaeologist he advocated utilizing the texts of Homer to trace the sites of ancient cities. Schielmann excavated the site of Hissarlik in 1871 and is now presumed to be the ancient city of Troy. In addition, he excavated the sites of Mycenae and Tiryns making significant discoveries and contributions to the field.
Summary:
One letter from Heinrich Schliemann to Karl Adolf Ludwig Bachofen von Echt (1830-1922) dated June 27, 1889. Bachofen von Echt was mayor of Nussdorf, Vienna and member of the Numismatic Society. Schliemann thanks Bachofen von Echt for his praise of the excavations at Mycenae and Tiryns and mentions viewing his archaeological treasure acquired at Troy. In addition, Schliemann notes Bachofen von Echt's work on Roman gold bars and their stamps.
