Summary:
Devotion to the Holy Spirit has played an important role in the social, political, and theological history of Catholics in the United States. In a major introduction to this volume Joseph P. Chinnici presents a detailed study of that devotion, tracing it from its European and Colonial American roots to its twentieth-century expression, including an analysis of the work of Thomas Scott Preston, John Keane, Otto Zardetti, and Isaac Hecker.
The text chosen to illustrate this devotion is a series of nine novena sermons delivered by an anonymous parish priest in New York and published in 1901. Novena of Sermons on the Holy Ghost in His Relationship to the World contains an introduction by James Cardinal Gibbons and three series of sermons. Series one traces the relationship of the Holy Ghost to the Blessed Virgin; series two, the relationship of the Holy Ghost to the Incarnate Word; and series three, the relationship of the Holy Ghost to the Written Word of God.
Those interested in the contemporary Charismatic piety, as well as those attempting to understand the history of spirituality in America will find this volume a unique and helpful guide.
