- Summary:
- Comprises a collection of paid receipts from inns in England from the years 1786 to circa 1818. Each bill has the printed letterhead or billhead at the top providing the name of the proprietor, the name of the inn, and the location. The largest receipt measures 5 1/2 x 8 inches and the smallest 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. The inns on the bills are chiefly located in the following counties in England: Cumbria, Shropshire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and York. Many of the receipts contain illustrations incorporated in the logo, for example Robert Day, Angel Inn, Doncaster has a prominent image of an angel; the S. Rusby, Greyhound Inn, Ferrybridge depicts a leaping greyhound; and Edward Batty, Excise Office, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, has an lion. Some receipts are handwritten listing what was served, dinner, breakfast, port, and wine. Virtually every receipt has fees for horses, hay and corn, and carriage services listed as "post-chaise" . A majority of the receipts have a list of pre-printed items for services such as breakfast, dinner, supper, port, sherry, claret, rum, brandy, tea and coffee, fruit paper, ale, servants, post chaise, coach fare, and bed. The printer's name appears at the bottom of some receipts. Some receipts have been signed by the innkeeper and some have notes on the verso.
