Biography/History:
Becket was the son of London bookseller and publisher Thomas Becket (1720?-1813). Andrew Becket attended the Chiswick School and intended to follow his father in the book trade. While working with his father family friends encouraged Becket to pursue a career in writing. One familly friend, actor David Garrick (1717-1779) secured a position for Becket as an assistant librian to the Prince of Wales. Becket wrote poetry, plays, miscellanies, and works on Shakespeare. Becket regularly wrote items for the Monthly review and British review.
Summary:
Comprises five letters and one memorandum spanning the years from 1810 to 1813. The first letter is written by Becket to printer William Marchant, of Galabin and Marchant, dated January 21, 1810. The letter concerns the proof sheets of Becket's work entitled Lucianus Redivivus, or Dialogues concerning men, manners, and opinions. The second letter is from Mr. Galabin on behalf of the printing company Galabin and Marchant dated July 20, 1811 concerning a payment owed by Becket for printing services. The third letter is a note from Mr. Foot dated March 25, 1812 regarding the arrival of Becket's book. A fourth letter dated January 12, 1813 is from Sir John Dean Paul (1775-1852) regards an annual donation sent to Becket. A note written by Becket at the top of the letter indicates the donation was in error. The fifth letter is a notice to Mr. Porter, partner of Thomas Becket, dated December 6, 1813. The notice demands Mr. Porter to turn over inventories, stock, business documents, and accounts that were to be given to the executors of Thomas Becket's estate. The notice is signed by William Stalker with a note inserted by Andrew Becket. The last item is a memorandum dated December 1813 concerning the death of Thomas Becket and his estate. The item indicates the division of assets, business accounts, and names the bookseller's successor Mr. Porter. There are two insert notes written in pencil by Andrew Becket. The document is signed by William Stalker.
