Ancient treatise and manual on śrauta sacrifice (large public ritual events); contains some of the earliest seeds of later Hindu mythology; contains the first eight sections (pañcikās). Functionally a commentary on the significance, symbolism, and meaning of the Ṛgveda.
Notes:
Title from marginal abbreviations.
Written in 6-7 lines per leaf.
305 leaves foliated (Part 1) 1-33, (Part 2) 1-42, (Part 3) 1-44, (Part 4) 1-35, (Part 5) 1-46, (Part 6) 1-39, (Part 7) 1-34, (Part 8) 1-32, upper left and lower right verso.
Dated saṃvat 1819-20 and śaka 1684-85 (1762-1763; Part 2, f. 42r and Part 8, f. 32r).
Mistakes covered over in yellow or blacked out; some corrections and additions in margins; significant syllables, words, or phrases highlighted in red throughout; vertical margins marked with triple red line; borders of folios treated with yellow turmeric powder to protect the manuscript from insect damage.
Scribe is possibly Gālambhaṭṭa Kāle as noted at the end of one section of the text (Part 6, f. 39); however, Kāle is primarily named throughout as a former owner, so this single instance may simply be a scribal error using the instrumental instead of genitive case, and the word likhitaṃ (was written/scribed) typically accompanying the instrumental case is lacking. However the other named owner of Part 3, Janārdana Kāle, is the scribe of another manuscript of the Aitareyabrāhmaṇa in the collection (University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Coll. 390, Item 85). This may indicate a family of owners/scribes of this particular group of texts.
