- Summary:
- This collection of international periodicals, newspapers, and newsletters provides a glimpse into the history of the gay rights movement from the 1950s to the first decade of the twenty-first century. The archive was established in Canada in the early 1970s and includes an array of Canadian and international publications from more than forty countries. While the United States also played a crucial role in the gay rights movement, this collection brings into focus the gay and lesbian movement in the rest of the world. The earliest items in the collection, dating from the 1950s, are several years' issues of the Swiss gay magazine Der Kreis. Western Europe was at the fore of the gay rights movement at the time, and Der Kreis had a readership far beyond its Alpine borders. The international movement is represented by publications such as Jeremy (England), Antinorm (France), Fuori! (Italy), Open Doors (Canada), Gay Liberation Press (Australia), Gay Liberator (New Zealand), Liberator (Israel), and dozens of other titles.
