Summary:

This book is the first in a series, intended to be three volumes in total, dealing with tomb depictions of banquets in the art of the eastern and western Mediterranean world. Since communal and festive or ceremonial food and/or drink played an important role in the lives of ancient people, and so an analysis of banquet scenes must look at the background of each of the different facets of the banquet. It could function as a social act in a secular context, but it could also function as a religious or sacred act in the worship of gods, heroes, or rulers, as well as in grave rituals and ceremonies of the dead. In the art of the ancient Mediterranean, numerous images of banquets and drinking parties of very different kinds appear in very different contexts. In each instance, the image may be charged with different ideological messages, and this multifunctionality helps explain the popularity of this subject in ancient times.
