- Summary:
- This volume provides a holistic overview of the advances in the use of biological control agents (BCAs) and plant resistance inducers to reduce various phytopathogenic infections of grapevine. The ecology, mechanisms involved in protection and application methods of these BCAs and inducers are discussed in detail as applied to organic viticulture, integrated pest management (IPM) systems and different grapevine diseases, such as grey mould (Botrytis cinerea), trunk diseases, powdery (Erysiphe necator) and downy mildews (Plasmopara viticola) and phytoplasmal diseases. A chapter is also included on the control of mycotoxin contamination of grapevines. Some of the chapters are overviews that discuss in detail the reduction of infection by a particular phytopathogen using established BCAs and plant resistance inducers. Other chapters describe new examples of BCAs and the mechanisms that are involved in reducing the occurrence of several grapevine pathogen diseases. New models for understanding the mechanisms of action of BCAs as well as reducing infection by pathogens are also presented. In addition, new technologies for understanding how microbes can protect plants are described, with discussion of their uses for organic farming and IPM systems as well as for future research in the field.
