Erst durch die Wiedervereinigung der geteilten Stadt Berlin in einem vereinten deutschen Staat 1990 wurde Berlin Hauptstadt - und ein Jahr später auch Sitz von Parlament und Regierung - der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. After the destruction of the Second World War Berlin, especially its downtown area, had to be adapted and recreated for a new future. And this under the difficult conditions in one zone of the occupied and divided city, in a Germany divided into four occupation zones. In 1945 the old city center was in the Soviet sector of East Berlin, and from 1949 assigned to the German Democratic Republic that had evolved from the Soviet zone of occupation. Until 1990, East Berlin war the capital of the GDR. Only after reunification of the divided city in a united Germany did Berlin become the capital - and a year later, also the seat of parliament and government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The questions concerning Berlin Mitte were raised once again.
