Summary:
Since the debt crisis broke out, Southern Europe has been the focus of public attention Made responsible for splitting up the old continent, the North-South divide has deep historical roots. After the second World War, lagging behind in their economic and political development, Spain, Portugal, and Greece as well as-in many respects-Italy deeply differed from the so-called Western European societies. At the turn of the 21st century, these countries appeared to have caught up and undoubtedly became a part of Europe's 'rich part' before however, the crisis threatened to divided the continent again. Looking at this paradoxical evolution, this book challenges general assumptions and images of Southern Europe. It tackles the question of whether the 'South' has represented an area with common paths of development whose analysis can help understand Western Europe's present and recent past. Book jacket.
