Summary:

This volume is the outcome of the William Smith Meeting of the Geological Society in April 1983. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the geometries, kinematics and mechanics of plate collision, in particular the distribution, sequence and timing of deformation, magmatic and metamorphic processes within a collision zone. It sought to clarify many new fields of investigation and to highlight some of the problems that remain to be solved.
