Summary:
Gerken (U. of Bologna, Italy) and Renieri (U. of Camerino, Italy) present the proceedings of an October 2004 joint symposium bringing together South American and European researchers studying South American camelids (llamas, alpacas, vicunas, and guanacos). Twenty-four full-length papers are grouped into sections concerned with artificial breeding in alpacas (the invited lecture), issues of sustainable development in camelid management, breeding and genetics, reproduction and pathology, nutrition, and meat and fiber production. Also included are 16 short communications reporting on a variety of other research projects and findings, followed by summaries of roundtables on management of alpaca populations outside of South America, the UK alpaca national industry, different approaches to research no wild and domestic camelids, breeders and keepers, and recent information on camelid diseases. Distributed in the US by Enfield. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
