Summary:
Simon Brown's book presents a thorough industrial, economic, and aesthetic: history of the early years of the British film industry through a case study of one of the most celebrated pioneer filmmakers of the early years of the twentieth century. The author gives us a picture of daily life in Cecil Hepworth's film studio, and provides an analysis of his films, along with coverage of the development of their content, production methods and marketing in this formative period. As film production shifted from being a cottage Industry to a complicated, large-scale national industry, Hepworth and his studio were at the heart of developments. Through his study of Cecil Hepworth, the author charts the larger development of the British film industry, with an emphasis on the changing nature of exhibition and distribution. Book jacket.
