- Vaclav Smil is a renowned researcher in the fields of energy, environment, food production and innovation, technical innovation, risk assessment, and public policy. He has written 35 books and more than 400 articles in these subject areas. In addition to his published work, Smil has been invited to speak at nearly 400 conventions, and many universities worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. He has also received the American Association for the Advancement of Science Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology. He completed his graduate studies at Carolinum University of Prague and Pennsylvania State University. Still the Iron Age: Iron and Steel in the Modern World explores the unique impact steel has had, and continues to have, on the world around us.
