Summary:
Across North America and Europe voices of intolerance and bigotry can be increasingly heard, often spilling over into street protests and encouraged by demagogic politicians. In this fantastically daring book, Hsiao-Hung Pai, an 'inscrutable foreigner', follows a group of individuals caught up in a wave of far-right street movements in the UK. Among those who Pai gets in with are Darren, who took part in the formation of the English Defence League only to leave two years later; an activist nicknamed Viking, who once occupied a cathedral in order to assert his right to carry a sword; and the infamous Tommy Robinson, founder of the EDL, whom Pai saw change from a young, foul-mouthed lad to a well-received, suited-and-booted Oxford Union guest speaker. Delving into the day-to-day lives of tar-right activists, and the marginalized communities around them, Pai reveals that their ideas are not an aberration in modern society; on the contrary, not only are they very much a part of it but they are constantly rejuvenated and mainstreamed by the media and powers that be.
