Summary:
The fifth edition of this text on criminal interrogation theory and procedures provides law enforcement practitioners and defense and prosecution lawyers with the latest revised and updated scholarship from the seminal developers of this field of investigative techniques. Drawn from experience first developed interrogating gangsters in Chicago in the 1930s and refined by the firm John E. Reid and Associates working with all levels of law enforcement throughout the twentieth century, this volume provides the definitive course on interrogation techniques used by federal, state and local authorities as well as criminal defense investigation groups such as The Innocence Project. Topics discussed include distinctions between interviews and interrogations, precautionary measures for the protection of the innocent, qualifications, attitude and conduct of interrogators, question formulation, behavior symptom analysis, specialized questioning techniques, the Reid Nine Steps of Interrogation and guidelines for distinguishing between true and false confessions. The work includes several black and white photographs and detailed references to relevant case law. Inbau and the late Reid are the developers of this technique and early innovators in the area of interrogation, and Buckley and Jayne are experts responsible for the updates and revision of this work.
