Biography/History:
Henrietta Pfaelzer was born in Philadelphia in 1878, the daughter of Morris and Sophia Pfaelzer. According to David M. Dorsen, she was socially prominent and came from a wealthy and established Philadelphia family. She was a member of the Young Women's Union of Philadelphia. In 1906, she married Horace Stern (1878-1968) who was an 1899 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a 1902 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In addition to a long and successful legal career, Stern served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania from 1952 to 1956. They had one daughter, Sophia (1908-1985) who married Henry Friendly. They appear to have been active in Philadelphia's Jewish Community. Henrietta Pfaelzer Stern died in 1974.
Summary:
This scrapbook dates from between 1892 and 1896 and includes playbills, photographs of actors, and newspaper clippings about theater in Philadelphia. This volume is titled "Programme Book," and is signed by Miss Henrietta Pfaelzer, and dated June 24, 1896. Several notable Philadelphia theaters are included in this scrapbook, including the Chestnut Street Theater, the Broad Street Theater, and Arch Street Theater. A playbill from the Empire Theater and the Garden Theater in New York City are also in this volume. She includes numerous photographs of actors in this volume and gives special attention to John Drew, Della Fox, Yvette Guilbert, Leslie Carter, Virginia Harned, and Ada Rehan. The scrapbook also contains several souvenir programs.
