Frederick Alexander McDonald was an Army Chaplain during World War II. He collected shards from broken stained glass windows from the damaged or destroyed churches and cathedrals that he visited in France, England, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. Thirteen contemporary artists have incorporated some of the shards he collected into 25 memorial works of art.
The windows and remaining glass shards reside in the Main Post Interfaith Chapel in the Presidio, San Francisco.
