- Summary:
- This work, the first in the series "Carta archeologica d'Italia. Puglia," presents the results of the systematic surface investigations conducted throughout the city of Mesagne, in the province of Brindisi. The first part of the volume includes a complete catalog of archeological evidence. Following that is an analysis of the collected data from various fields (archaeology, historical and literary studies, archival evidence, cartography, and aerial photography) that seeks to reconstruct the history of the city and its territory, from prehistoric times to late antiquity. An examination is also made of several different aspects of the area, including the development of its population, its agricultural use and production, the organization of its system of roads, and its political and socio-economic character.
