- Europe's Utopias of Peace explores the entanglement of warfare and welfare in modern Europe and addresses attempts to create a lasting European peace in the aftermath of ever more violent wars. The book charts the 250-year cycle of European conflicts followed by new Utopian formulations for peace. Bo Stråth examines the pursuit of a stable, peaceful Europe from the 19th century through to the present day. He investigates the faces and phases of nationalism and how nationalism connected welfare politics for the solution of domestic social problems to warfare. He argues that it was the world wars that made democracy possible but also paved the way for totalitarian systems. The narrative sets out the key historical events and links them to legal, political and economic thought. Biographical sketches of the most prominent thinkers and actors provide the human element to this survey of the European search for apolitical economy for peace and welfare. Europe's Utopias of Peace presents a new perspective on the ideological, legal, economic and intellectual conditions that shaped Europe since the 19th century and presents this in a global context.
