- Summary:
- Geopolitics is the study of how the projection of soft and hard power (ideological, cultural, economic, military) is effected and affected by the geographic and political landscape of both the theater of operation at which it is directed and, to some extent, the geographic space through which it must pass to reach that theater. Despite the real world relevance of the discipline, the term "geopolitics" has seen a multitude of meanings that leave a common understanding beyond the reach of both researchers and practitioners. In Classical Geopolitics, Phil Kelly attempts to build a theoretical model that reflects the complexity of the modern geopolitical stage, and then uses it to analyze seven pivotal but widely differing historical events with a view to testing the efficacy of the model as an analytical tool: one that will have utility across a broad spectrum of geopolitical contexts and events. The variables incorporated include concepts such as buffer states, checkerboards, choke points, contagion, diseases, distance, encirclement, frontiers, heartlands, independent regions, spheres of influence, sea power and land power, and topography. The historical events to which the model is applied stretch from the Peloponnesian War and the ancient Roman republic/empire to the contemporary diplomacy of South America and to the current shatter-belt in Ukraine.
