Summary:
All over the world, an emerging form of smart urbanism is increasingly presented as a vital response to meeting the future challenges of the urban condition. The promise of smart urbanism - from smart cities to smart infrastructures, buildings and grids - is that digital technologies can provide solutions to fundamental problems, from environmental sustainability and the governance of increasingly complex cities to service delivery and social inclusion. Key voices in these wide-ranging debates and initiatives include technology companies, national governments, supranational agencies and civil society organisations. All of these, in different ways, claim crucial roles for digital technologies across urban life, including managing and controlling infrastructures, achieving greater effectiveness in service demand and provision, reducing carbon emissions, developing greater social interaction and community networks and rebooting economic growth - all of this whilst increasing political transparency and rolling out innovative systems for holding authorities to account. But can cities be simply rebooted through the integration of digital technologies with buildings, neighbourhoods, infrastructures and people? Is the smart urbanism offer about new possibilities for the future transformation of our cities, or is it just a sophisticated form of 'business-as-usual', a mere tweaking of existing arrangements? This book evaluates the contemporary promise of smart urbanism and critically appraises its potential. It brings together leading international researchers on smart cities to critically address these discourses and practices across the world, from India to the USA and from South Africa to Europe. It examines what drives smart city initiatives and to what ends, evaluates what new capabilities are being created by whom and with what exclusions, explores how smart city initiatives are being differently developed and contested, considers how these processes vary within and across cities and investigates their social, political, economic and environmental consequences. Smart Urbanism is an essential resource for advanced-level students and early-career researchers across urban studies. Book jacket.
