Summary:
This is the first substantial account of the development of secondary education in London from the period of the Middle Ages up to the end of the nineteenth century. Of importance to educationalists, and to social and urban historians, it throws a fresh light upon this aspect of London's historical fabric, revealing, for example, how much the foundations of the modern educational system owe to the City of London through the livery companies. Strangely, this is an area of study hitherto neglected.
