Algeria's current politics are influenced by its colonial period under the French to an extent not seen in other North African and Middle Eastern states. Indeed, Malika Rebai Maamri argues that Algeria's post-colonial history and politics are, in fact, a series of attempts to come to terms with the dire consequences of this colonial past. With over half a century having passed since independence, the country is still struggling to create a unified Algerian identity, and any discussion on the concept highlights how, all too frequently, the concept of identity can serve as a form of exclusion. By exploring the cultural realm as well as the issues posed by social and political integration, Rebai Maamri seeks to demonstrate the link between the political identities enforced by the colonial state and the construction of nationhood in independent Algeria. Focusing on the emotional production entering into the daily manufacturing of nationhood and citizenship, she seeks to analyse how emotionality feeds into many aspects of Algerian life and the everyday production of rights and entitlements. Unlike most other discussions on the subject which limit their analysis to the colonial period, Rebai Maamri employs a chronological framework of investigation. Exploring first the French colonial discourse surrounding the concepts of state and citizenship, then the Algerian nationalist discourse and finally the post-colonial discourse, she provides an understanding of the challenges facing Algeria as it tries to define its national identity and find its place not only in the African continent but also in the modern era. In doing so, Rebai Maamri offers an in-depth analysis of a country which is often sidelined IN the study of the Middle East and North Africa, and yet is a vital component in the search for a post-colonial identity and state in the region.
