- Summary:
- In the Middle Ages there were a large number of compositions on eschatological themes and compositions relating to the funeral ritual. It is significant that most of the few musical pieces recoverable of ancient Hispanic liturgy belong to the Officium Defunctorum. A varied repertoire of macabre themes consists of laments, dances of death, responsories and other forms of poetic and musical expressions such as as antiphons and tropes, which are the reflection of the questions that humans have ever had about the afterlife, about the meaning of life and death, behind which opens a space of fear or hope.
