Summary:

Exploring the C-SPAN Archives is a collection of path-breaking research studies that use video drawn from the C-SPAN Archives. The book, based on the papers presented at a November 2014 conference, includes chapters that explore issues in presidential debates, minority representation, the presentation of the First Lady of the United States, STEM research and innovative ways to analyze video. This volume is organized around four themes: Making Sense of Recorded Events and Re Collected Memories; Changing Ways of Searching and Analyzing Data; Contributing Engaged Scholarship: and Celebrating Difference Telling Our Stories. In Theme 1, Making Sense of Recorded Events and Re-Collected Memories, scholars uncover the ritual the ritual of presidential debates in the age of cable news and present a framing analysis of the C-SPAN series. The Communicators Changing Ways of Searching and Analyzing Data, Theme 2, starts with an image bite analysis of nonverbal aspects of the Obama-Romney debates, continues with a new approach to analyzing conflict in the House, then explores the value of using the C-SPAN Archives in massive open online courses (MOOCs) and for citizen education in the post-digital age. Theme 3, Contributing Engaged Scholarship, explores the ways that science and technology are depicted in C-SPAN recordings of public events. In Theme 4, Celebrating Difference, Telling Our Stories, scholars analyze the oral histories of African American members of Congress, the presentation style of Michelle Obama as "Mom-In-Chief," senatorial voting patterns, the representation of women in STEM, and bipartisan interaction during House roll call votes. The final chapter is a reflective essay on the future directions of research using the C-SPAN Archives based on the essays in this volume. Book jacket.
