Biography/History:

Clay was a watchmaker, who lived on Bridge Street in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. He married Maria Elizabeth (1815?-1867) and the couple had two sons Thomas, born in 1852 and Charles, born in 1853.

Summary:

Small red volume with green, marbled endpapers and "Recipe book 1838" written black ink on the front cover. The volume is comprised chiefly of medicinal recipes and remedies for various ailments and diseases. There are several prescriptions to alleviate and/or cure colds, coughs, fevers, jaundice, rheumatism, and stomach ailments. There are also remedies for cancer, consumption, and cholera. Formulas for lotions, ointments, and salves appear in the volume. Some recipes appear to be copied from other sources. For instance, "Captain John Nights liquor of life" and a prescription for cholera attributed to Navy surgeon Thomas Hope. Recipes for cleaners, polishes, blacking, and varnishes to aid in household chores are included. There are some cookery recipes for pickling, vinegar, ginger beer, and soda bread. Some of the recipes are dated with the last recorded date in the volume for the year 1862. The word "receipt" has been crossed out on the front cover.
