- Summary:
- As our economy continues to recover from the 2008 financial crisis, independent schools are being challenged to plan strategically for the future of their organizations---financial sustainability in the 21st century is critical for their survival. This study explores how Midwestern boarding schools ensure the long-term financial health of their organizations and, more specifically, how trustees and senior leaders plan for the long-term financial sustainability of their boarding schools and how these plans are reflected in their official strategic outlook. The study builds knowledge in four main areas. First, this study highlights how leaders' decision-making processes inform school financial sustainability. Second, it develops a deeper understanding of the influence of contextual factors like economy and mission on school leaders' decision-making processes. Third, it reveals the importance of financial strategic plans in ensuring school sustainability. And finally, it describes the role of varied tools in securing the long-term sustainability of boarding schools. Overall, this dissertation builds valuable insight into how trustees and senior leaders engage in financial decision-making and planning practices to secure the future of their boarding schools.
