Summary:
This collection of 14 essays presents several analyses of violent protests. They are all from an international conference in Athens a year after that city was the site of riots following the murder of a teenager by a police officer. They consider violent protests from several different angles: political and social characteristics, emotional and cognitive factors, instruments and forms of organization, discursive elements and mass media. The essays are divided into four sections that offer comparative and theoretical perspectives, as well as regional perspectives from France, Germany, Iran, Thailand, and Great Britain and a special section on the riots in Greece mentioned above. The contributors are professors of sociology and political science from around the world, and the collection includes an essay by noted American political scientist, Frances Fox Piven.
