"Born in New York City in 1919, Frederik Pohl had an extraordinary career. He published enduring novels, novellas, and short stories in many genres: fables, satires, romances, voyages into the unknown. He collaborated with other major sf writers--Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Theodore Sturgeon, Jack Williamson--on other novels. The Space Merchants (1953), written with C. M. Kornbluth, is an established classic. His 1977 novel Gateway is another; it swept the awards that year, winning the Hugo, the Locus, the Nebula, and theJohn W. Campbell Memorial Award. His Jem (1979) won a National Book Award. He won four Hugo and three Nebula Awards. In addition to his fiction, Pohl was a highly successful editor of two science fiction magazines, Galaxy and If, where he launched many other writers who would themselves become famous. He edited numerous anthologies and frequently reviewed the works of others. He was an observant writer about science fiction in print and on his award-winning blog.
