Summary:
This essay is the written version of the Bijhouwerlezing that architectural historian Marinke Steenhuis presented on September 12, 2014. Steenhuis portrays how the initial gentle landscape architecture in the Netherlands in a relatively short time emancipated into a full institutionalized discipline in addition to civil engineering, agricultural engineering, urban planning and architecture. In the twentieth century Dutch landscape architects gave shape to major landscape interventions such as land consolidation and the IJsselmeer polders. Included in this field are planning for holidays and other such projects. Especially after World War II, landscaping went from a practice-based design business into a full-fledged scientific discipline.
