Biography/History:
Evelyn Manuel Huber was born on September 28, 1917 in Rumson, New Jersey to Herbert Emil Huber and Horacina Manuel Miller. Her brother Herbert Emil, Jr. was born in 1915. Huber's paternal grandmother, Theresa Marie Baron Huber, was the sister of Elvina Baron Mumford (mother of Lewis Mumford). Huber graduated from Merchantville High School in 1936. A poet at heart, she earned her income at J.B. Lippincott Co., the 41st International Eucharistic Congress and the Philadelphia College of Physicians. During World War II, she served in the United State Marine Corps Women's Reserve Battalion and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Huber passed away on June 10, 2002.
Summary:
The bulk of this collection contains letters written to Evelyn Manuel Huber by her first cousin once removed, Lewis Mumford and his wife Sophia. The Mumford's daughter Alison also contributed a few letters as did Sophia Mumford's father, William Wittenberg. Arranged chronologically, the letters kept Huber up to date of the Mumfords's daily activities, including Lewis's writing. Huber took advantage of her famous relative and would often send the Mumfords poems she had written. The Mumfords in turn would provide feedback and encouragement. The remaining part of the collection contains a photo album of the Baron, Huber and Mumford families. The physical album was falling apart so the photographs were removed but their page placement remains intact.
