- Summary:
- Reproductive rights are human rights. Reproductive justice and Women's Voices: Health Communication across the Lifespan offers an in-depth analysis of women's reproductive health in a transformative sociopolitical moment. Beth Sundstrom analyzes women's reproductive health across the lifespan through four critical body episodes: contraceptive use dynamics, pregnancy, childbirth, and the post-partum period. Using in-depth interviews. Sundstrom examines how women make meaning of each body episode through analysis of the physiological experience of reproductive health, perceptions of medicine, and opinions of mediated messages about reproduction. The analysis disrupts the nature/technology dualism and reconceptualizes health outside of the normative processes of menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth. Through stories and silence, the women interviewed demand accurate information about the risks and benefits of health care in addition to reproductive services and technologies. By talking with women, this study privileges women's decisions about reproductive health and offers insight into these unique communication and storytelling practices. Book jacket.
