Summary:
On September 28, 1864 Delegates Representing European Workers met in London to create the International Workingmen's Association (the "International"). The purpose of the organization was to provide support for workers across national boundaries in their struggles against international capital. None of the delegates present on this day identified as anarchists, yet from this organization an international anarchist movement cohered and challenged Marxists for the mantle and soul of socialism.
