Summary:
After approximately 60 years of attachment research, every development psychologist acknowledges that one of the critical factors in early development is the formation of a secure attachment, that is a child's confidence in and use of an available attachment figures as a source for proximity and support. Beyond infancy, when attachment becomes less crucial for biological survival, confidence in the attachment figure becomes increasingly important for children's support seeking in response to psychological stressors like hurt pride, fear, and sadness. Although middle childhood has been assumed to be a crucial development period to understand the associations between the formation of early parent-child attachment bonds and later adaptive versus maladaptive development, research on attachment within middle childhood has only emerged in the last two decades. This volume provides a timely review of progress to date, describing important insights that have both theoretical and clinical importance as well as identifying remaining gaps in our understanding. The Current volume summarizes the most important findings across six papers and two commentaries reviewing the main areas of middle childhood attachment research. Therefore, this volume is not only important for theory on child (attachment) development, but also for clinicians to broaden their understanding of the importance of middle childhood attachment processes for understanding the development of children's behavior problems and for designing effective treatment strategies.
