- Summary:
- "My life in psychology since the mid-20th century has seen many dominant and emerging paradigms, from the strict behaviorism of B. F. Skinner to the flourishing of the cognitive and psychobiological paradigms in the latter part of the century and into the present. Age does not necessarily bring wisdom, but it does bring a broader perspective over time. I have always been interested in the assessment and sources of personality and individual differences. In my early career, like most clinical psychologists, I believed that the dynamic forces within the family shaped personality and psychopathology, and that genetics and biological factors had little role. However, the results from my own research and that of others on the trait I named sensation seeking turned me toward a psychobiological approach"--Preface.
