Summary:

The primary purpose of this book is to provide a comparative study of several major systems of individual verbal psychotherapy by analyzing each one in relation to a common set of issues, in order to reveal major areas of agreement and disagreement about these issues. This is a book about theory. The body of each chapter presents the theorist's ideas without criticism or evaluation. At the end of each chapter, we present some comments that occurred to us as a consequence of the analysis. We shall be pleased if this volume helps other psychotherapists to examine and more clearly formulate their own ideas about therapy. We hope some who have devoted their lives to research will be stimulated to investigate some of the alternative hypotheses revealed by our analysis. We shall be even more gratified if students find it helps them to become effective professionals. For the informed layman who enjoys thinking about why humans are what they are, we hope what we have done stirs his thoughtful brew a bit more.
