Summary:
The phenomena of mental abnormality are both varied and complex. Interest in this field is shared by numerous groups of workers. Proficiency in it requires expertness in several branches of learning not yet adequately organized into any program or curriculum, and skill acquired only through experience. Textbooks in the field of psychopathology have usually emphasized clinical pictures rather than concepts, cases rather than ideas, procedures rather than principles. In this volume, an effort is made to feature the systematic aspects rather than the expediencies. Within the limitations of space and personal competence that are inevitable, an attempt is made to consider the prevalent concepts, to illustrate and evaluate them, and to relate them to the general body of scientific information about mental activity.
